Last Tuesday, the 68th Annual Emmy Awards took place and all of Hollywood’s television A-listers opened up their red carpet wardrobes. Celebrities ranging from Modern Family’s Sofia Vegara to SNL’s Leslie Jones and Scandal’s Kerri Washington filled the Red Carpet with gorgeous designer gowns. As I scrolled through best-dressed and worst-dressed lists, as I always do after an awards show, I began to notice a common theme between several of the style choices–an oriental influence. I noticed a trend of bright colors, bold floral prints, and Kimono-like structures to many of the gowns.
Sara Hyland was my personal favorite from this years Emmy Awards because was the first celeb who caught my eye with this oriental inspiration. Going against the grain, Hyland went with black pants and a soft pink, strapless Monique Lhuillier top. The top is what drew my attention to this oriental theme. It has a sort of peplum-style to it with a long train on both sides. The floral pattern cascading down the bodice and the train is very elegant.
Kirsten Bell’s look was similar to Sarah Hyland’s ‘sweetheart’ look. She wore a beautiful Zuhair Murad Couture gown. It was soft cream color with an intricate floral pattern. It almost looked like someone water colored the fabric–simply stunning!
Laura Carmichael pulled out a 2011 trend and went with a classic color-blocked look. The skirt of her dress was lilac matched with a bright yellow top that tied around the waist giving it an oriental look.
Jane Krakowski was wearing a gorgeous Kimono-style, purple gown with an intricate, white floral pattern. The cap sleeves and appearance of a wrapped front with the jeweled belt create the oriental look of a Kimono.
Constance Zimmer also wore a gorgeous cap sleeve Monique Lhuillier gown with a high-scooped neckline. The pink floral print covering the sheer off-white fabric adds to the oriental trend that I noticed at this year’s Emmy Awards.
Yara Shahid continued the cap sleeve trend in a sheer, cream-colored Ade Samuel gown. The bodice was very structured and had a cream and white dotted pattern on a sheer fabric. It again gave the appearance of an elegant water-color design.
Caleb McLaughlin and Millie Bobby Brown
Last, but certainly not least, even the young stars at the Emmy Awards channeled an oriental vibe. Netflix’s Stranger Things stars Caleb McLaughlin and Millie Bobby Brown made an appearance on the red carpet with fellow costar Gaten Matarazzo.
Caleb McLaughlin (center) wore a navy blazer with silver detailing and a white bow tie. The silver detailing was very detailed and complex.
Millie Bobby Brown (right) wore a beautiful black dress with a sheer over lay that was belted with a ribbon. The dress had a humming-bird print that added a pop of color.
I absolutely loved the looks from the 2016 Emmy Awards. I thought they were all around very classy and gave a ‘sweetheart’ vibe. The cap sleeves, high necklines, structured bodices, and floral prints presented an oriental theme throughout all of the looks. This is the most conservative I’ve seen a red carpet and I loved it!! What do you think about the oriental theme that seemed to have run through the 2016 Emmy Awards?
Until Next Time,
