I’ve always been on the fence when it comes to overalls. This past summer I finally decided I liked overall shorts and this fall I’m realizing that I love them. They definitely can be tricky to style, so here are a few tips to help you rock this fall trend.
1. Make it Chic
Who knew overalls could be chic? The key to achieving this look is the combo of a pair of heels and a soft blouse, as well as the accessories. Heels automatically make any outfit dressier and they help to lengthen the leg. A pretty blouse balances out the casual feel of the overalls, and accessories such as a statement necklace or a watch pull the whole look together.
2. Add Layers
Layering is my go-to strategy for making an outfit complete. In both outfits, this was done by adding a jacket. I love the pop of red in the first outfit; the classic color and silhouette of the jacket contrasts nicely with the overalls. In the second outfit, the moto-style jacket adds a hint of edginess to the casual overalls.
3. Not Just Denim
If you feel that denim is too casual for you, try overalls in another fabric such as leather or khaki. This will instantly help to dress up the laid-back silhouette and make it dressier. The outfit on the left is a great example of how overalls can help balance the busier elements of an outfit, such as the patterned top and large necklace and make them wearable.
4. Keep it Casual
Overalls are also perfect for laid-back days. They’re comfy and easy to throw on with a t-shirt and sneakers. I love the distressed look of the overalls in the first outfit and how they contrast with the clean white sneakers and t-shirt. Don’t be afraid to add in a pop of color like the second outfit to keep the outfit from being boring.
5. Try a Crop Top
A crop top makes overalls more wearable and casual. It’s an easy way to make the outfit flirty by letting a portion of your midriff show in an otherwise covered-up outfit. I think this play on proportions is so fun and such an easy way to style overalls. You can still keep it dressy by adding heels or by wearing a crop top made of a shiny material.
