Rihanna: Pop Star Turned Fashion Powerhouse

Born in Saint Michael, Barbados, Robyn Rihanna Fenty grew up selling clothes with her father in a stall on the streets. Her life soon changed when she turned fifteen and formed a musical trio with two of her classmates. Rihanna was immediately plucked from the group, and flown to Los Angeles where Jay-Z signed her to Def Jam the same day of her audition. She quickly took over the music world, selling millions of copies of her studio albums including Music of the Sun, A Girl Like Me, Good Girl Gone bad, Rated R, Loud, Talk That Talk, Unapologetic, and most recently Anti in 2016. Along with a highly successful music career, the pop star also makes her presence known in the film industry. She most recently starred in Ocean’s 8, alongside her all-female cast of notable actresses, like the well-known Sandra Bullock.


While Rihanna was in the spotlight for her music and film career, the superstar’s fashion style didn’t go unnoticed. On June 2, 2014, Rihanna received the Fashion Icon Award at the 2014 Council of Fashion Designer of America Fashion Awards. She stated that her love and admiration for fashion started with her mom. When putting together her own wardrobe she stated, “It’s become more about taking a risk; I always look for the most interesting silhouette or something that’s a little off.” During the Vogue Festival in 2015, Balmain designer Olivier Rousteing praised Rihanna by stylistically comparing her to some of the biggest fashion icons in music history, such as Madonna, David Bowie, Michael Jackson, and Prince.


Early on in her career, Rihanna expressed interest in fashion and her desire to work in the clothing design industry. Her first venture into the fashion world was in 2011 with Armani. In 2013, Rihanna presented her first women’s spring fashion collection at London Fashion Week for British street fashion brand, River Island. She went on to release three more collections with them that year. In March 2015, it was announced that Rihanna had been chosen as the new face of Dior, making her the first black woman to be the face of the company.


In December of 2014, it was announced that Rihanna would become the creative director of the fashion sportswear Puma. Over the next two years, she released various footwear products in different colorways and styles, which were all met positively. In Fall 2017, Rihanna x Puma returned to New York, for the debut of their autumn collection, like previous lines the collection was met with positive reviews.


In 2017, Fenty Beauty was launched and included an array of products including foundations, highlighters, bronzers, blush compacts, lip glosses, and blotting sheets. It was praised for its diverse range for all skin colors, including 40 different shades of foundation. These shades were immediately sold out, making her mark in the business world. In 2018, she also released SAVAGE X FENTY, an inclusive lingerie line. It made it’s New York Fashion Week debut on September 12, 2018.

Although she may have started off in the music industry, Rihanna has proven to everyone that she is a powerhouse in music, film, business, and now fashion. She is a force to be reckoned with and we’re excited to see what Rihanna holds for us in 2019!
