Recently, I purchased the iconic James Charles x Morphe eyeshadow palette and I can honestly say it has been one of my best purchases so far; I only reach for his palette now when I do my makeup! This palette comes with 39 well-pigmented shades with a variety of matte, metallic, and shimmer finishes. The tagline for this palette is to “Unleash Your Inner Artist” and if you do not know Sister James is, he is very well-known for his creative and colorful makeup looks on his YouTube channel.
I’m not going to lie, when I first saw the palette hit the market, of course I wanted it, but I wasn’t entirely sure if I would use all of the colors. He included neutrals in there but the bright yellow and lime green scared me a little bit because I literally could not think of a time when I would ever dip into those. Everyone who I talked to said to not get the palette unless I was going to use most of the colors, which I didn’t think I was.
I didn’t have a lot of time to decide whether or not I wanted to get the palette considering it sells out within hours when James announces a restock. I kept going back and forth on whether or not I wanted to get the palette and one day when I was in class (sorry mom and dad), James had just announced a restock and I purchased it.
Anxiously awaiting my palette, I watched a ton of James’ videos and other YouTube videos of makeup artists using the palette just so I could get some inspiration as to what looks I could potentially create with it.
My palette finally arrived a few days after ordering it and I immediately opened it and just stared at it, too afraid to touch the eyeshadows because I did not want to mess them up. When I finally did build up the courage to swatch the colors, I was super impressed to see how pigmented they were. Now, I am no professional makeup artist, but I do know a quality eyeshadow palette when I see one and this is it!
The first look I did was different shades of pink and in that moment I realized that, contrary to my original thought, I was definitely going to dip into each color at one point or another; I actually did dip into the lime green shade on St. Patrick’s Day and loved it! There are so many fun looks that anyone can create using this palette and it is super versatile. I know James will use some of the colors for blush and his favorite is to use the shade ‘face’ as his highlight. What I like most about this palette is how I really don’t need to use any other palette; this has everything I need from base and transition shades all the way to the best metallics to perfectly cut my crease the James Charles way.
I am noticing that the makeup community is starting to shy away from the traditional neutral or smokey-eye eyeshadow palettes. Instead, we have artists like Jeffree Star launching his brand new ‘Blue Blood’ collection on March 29, which is a collection of all different shades of blues; something no one has ever done before. We have Norvina, the daughter of Anastasia Beverly Hills, and the stunning ‘Norvina’ palette which has a pink and purple shade range, also one of my favorite palettes. Finally, we of course have James Charles and his ‘Artistry’ palette.
As someone who just likes to play around when it comes to makeup when I go out or just for fun, this palette has made me feel like I actually know what I am doing and I look forward to doing my eyeshadow, which is something I never used to like. I love dipping into different colors and just seeing what I can create. I will leave the readers with my final thought about the James Charles x Morphe palette; it has me sister SHOOK.
