How Social Media Influencers are Changing the Fashion Industry

Over time our society has become increasingly dependent on social media. Social media allows us to connect with people worldwide by downloading an app and setting up a profile. In this growing age of technology, social media has become exceedingly important to the vast majority of our everyday lives. I use social media to catch up with friends and family, look at celebrity news, and, most importantly, see what my favorite fashion influencers are wearing. Along with social media come influencers. Influencers are people who have a large following and create content that is popular amongst lots of people and whose purpose is to “influence” the mass public. Many different influencers promote many different things, but fashion influencers tend to have the biggest hold on me. Social media is one of the largest platforms for fashion influence. I could spend hours scrolling through my favorite influencers’ fashion posts to see what they are wearing, how they are styled, and where I can buy all of their clothes. Fashion inspiration can come from anywhere, yet social media influencers play a considerable role in popularizing many different styles that ultimately become part of the latest fashion trends.

Over 4 billion people around the world are on social media. The average person spends at least two and a half hours a day on social media. Thus billions of people from all over the world are being influenced by social media every day, whether they realize it or not. Think about it, the household items you buy, the restaurants you go to, or the clothes you choose to wear are primarily influenced by recommendations formed in the media. While everyone has their taste and unique sense of style, there is no denying that everyone is influenced by the media, to some extent. People can be persuaded by a whole number of things, but one of the biggest forms of social media influence is the influence of fashion. Some of the social media sites that have been known for their influential power on fashion are Tik Tok, Instagram, YouTube, and Twitter. Every day, I scroll through my feed and see hundreds of different fashion looks that are profoundly unique. Since social media reaches a wide variety of people, it is one of the best platforms for influencing fashion. We see social media used by brands all the time. It has become increasingly important to companies; thus, they are now hiring people to work on social media teams to help create an extensive following and promote their brand. Social media influencing is simply another form of marketing, but social media influencers have begun to gain a massive following making them somewhat mini-celebrities that people look up to and want to resemble.

As mentioned earlier, the people who help us decide what we want to buy and where we want to go are social media influencers. While constantly being on social media myself, I feel as though I am qualified enough to share a few of my favorite social media influencers from my curated list who have been tremendously changing my outlook on fashion. To start, one of my personal favorites influencers is Devon Lee Carlson. Devon Lee Carlson is single-handedly bringing back Y2K fashion that I wore at the ripe age of 6. However, her version of the early 2000s style is elevated and extremely exciting. She mostly wears vintage clothes from the early 2000s era, but she also works with high-end brands such as Versace, Burberry, and Marc Jacobs. Another creative influencer is Barbra Kristoffersen. Barba Kristoffersen has a minimalistic style with lots of pops of colors incorporated. Her outfits usually feature baggy jeans, oversized blazers, and sneakers. Recently, she has been working with many brands to create small collections that incorporate her true style. Lastly, another favorite fashion influencer of mine is Megan Trong. She is somewhat of a smaller influencer but has some of the best outfits. Many of her looks include baggy pants and long skirts, sweatshirts, sneakers, and crop tops. In addition, her outfits are street-style inspired with more of a girly flair to them. There are so many more social media fashion influencers that I could talk about who have helped me develop and shape my style. Since there are many creative influencers on social media, there is a little something for everyone to be influenced by and enjoy.

It never ceases to amaze me how creative some people are in styling certain clothing and completely transforming items that I never would have even looked at in a store. I am always inspired by someone on the internet no matter how many followers they have or if they are a certified “social media influencer.” However, bona fide social media influencers are truly changing the fashion industry for so many people and so many fashion brands and companies. Fashion is constantly evolving and changing; thus, being able to look at the people who are carrying the trends and latest styles is the easiest way to catch up on it all. I love to browse different media sites to find the latest trends and new inspiration from my favorite influencers.
